After more extra-time and shootout drama in the Westfield FFA Cup, Sydney United’s jubilant coach Mark Rudan hailed the theatrical nature of his side’s comeback then shootout heroics over South Hobart on Tuesday night.
In a Round of 32 match day 2 classic in the the FFA Cup, a thrilling 3-3 draw and goalless extra-time period at Edensor Park saw Anthony Tomelic, Panny Nikas and Chris Triantis all score from the spot to secure a 3-1 shootout win for United.

“It was a great moment [for the club] but great theatre for those who turned up and got a ticket. South Hobart were good value weren’t they.
“They [South Hobart] really pushed us and tried to press at times,” said Rudan, a rising star of Aussie coaching.
United made it hard for themselves by going 2-0 down before the fightback that had them leading 3-2 with just ten or so minutes left.
But the feisty Tassie club refused to lie down and dragged the contest back to 3-3.
Justin Pasfield’s penalty heroics for Rudan’s United ensured a fairytale ending for United.
“We thought we had the game but credit to them but take your hat off to my players, considering it’s been a tough six weeks for us,” said Rudan of a side that’s been struggling in the league.
Rudan added he had a preference if A-League opposition were drawn with his club in the Round of 16.
“Beggars can’t be choosers,” he said with a grin. “With Sydney FC we’ve been there and done that [last yea]. I’d love an A-League side and if it was the Wanderers it’d be a match made in heaven.”
