History in the Cup: Brisbane Roar

Brisbane Roar look to book their spot in the Australia Cup Final Rounds via the playoffs after putting together their best run in the competition in 2021.

Roar reached the Australia Cup Quarter Finals last season completing their deepest ever run with 3-0 and 4-0 wins over NPL Queensland sides Peninsula Power and Lions respectively.

Cyrus Dehmie’s hat-trick in his sides 4-0 Round of 16 victory over Lions was enough to see the 19-year-old finish as the Australia Cup Final Rounds top scorer for 2021.

Roars 2021 cup run came to halt in the Quarter Finals when they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Sydney FC at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium.

The Roar’s 2021 cup run is one of only three times the club have made it past the Round of 32, having reached the competition’s last 16 in 2014 and then again in 2019.

A 4-0 Round of 32 win over Stirling Lions in their first ever Australia Cup match thanks to goals from Henrique, Corey Brown, Matt Smith and Jean Carlos Solorzano saw Roar reach the Round of 16 in the competition’s inaugural season.

It was eventual Champions, Adelaide United who ended the Roar’s run with goals from Bruce Djite and Sergio Cirio sealing a 2-0 result at Coopers Stadium.

What followed was four lean years with Roar suffering four straight Round of 32 defeats all against A-League opposition, scoring just one goal in the process.

In 2019 Brisbane bagged their second Australia Cup win, defeating Sydney FC 2-0 on the road thanks to goals from Stefan Mauk and Jay OShea.

Roar were then defeated in the Round of 16 on penalties by Central Coast Mariners after playing out a 2-2 draw Moreton Daily Stadium.
