Rewind: Brisbane Strikers stun Phoenix in shootout win

August 7, 2019 saw Brisbane Strikers become the eighth National Premier League side to defeat A-League Men opposition after beating Wellington Phoenix 4-2 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in the Australia Cup Round of 32.

Hiroki Omori got the 1,612 crowd going with a sharp finish from the edge of the 18-yard box.

Eight minutes into the second-half and the Strikers were in dreamland when Andy Pengelly controlled the ball and arrowed his finish through a sea of bodies to make it 2-0 from a corner.

But the visitors showed their quality and scored twice within 13 minutes to restore parity.

Cameron Devlin initially halved the deficit with a neat first-time effort on the half volley following David Ball's cushioned header, before the equaliser arrived through Callum McCowatt's low shot from distance in the 71st minute.

On the stroke of half-time of extra-time, David Ball squandered a penalty after Bon Scott produced a stunning save and it meant the clash would go the distance.

The Strikers slotted all four of their penalties while Ball this time skied his spot-kick and McCowatt had his effort saved by Scott, concluding an entertaining night of cup football.
