SA Preliminary Round 2 Weekend Preview

Another exciting weekend of cup football is upon us as the second round of the Australia Cup South Australian qualifiers kicks off Thursday night. We take a quick look at some of the exciting matchups for this upcoming round.

Round Two of the Australia Cup South Australia Qualifiers gets underway with a showdown between two RAA NPLSA teams with Sturt Lions hosting MetroStars at Karingal Reserve. Both clubs are currently experiencing a poor period of form, with Sturt Lions without a win in their last two fixtures, while MetroStars are without a win since Round Four of the RAA NPLSA. Both clubs experienced impressive 2021 Australia Cup campaigns with Sturt Lions making the Quarter Finals, while MetroStars was knocked out in the Semi-Final to Adelaide City, ultimately missing the opportunity to qualify for the Final Rounds. Only one club can book a place in the Round of 16.

In other Thursday night action, we are treated to a repeat of the 2021 State League One Grand Final as FK Beograd travels to Jack Smith Park to face WT Birkalla. This will be the first time both teams meet since their entertaining Grand Final last October. FK Beograd has picked up great form in the recent weeks, winning three of their last four matches, whereas, their opponents WT Birkalla have only won one of their opening seven matches. WT Birkalla will be looking for revenge after FK Beograd beat them to the State League One championship in 2021.

Thursday night cup football continues with a State League One matchup as West Adelaide host Adelaide Victory at Marden Sports Complex. West Adelaide is eager to continue their great start to their 2022 season which has seen them gain third place in their league competition. While Adelaide Victory will aim to utilise their great league form, which has seen them lose once in their opening seven matches, however, have struggled to win many games, drawing five out of seven matches. West Adelaide knocked off Adelaide Thunder 6-0 in the first round with Adelaide Victory securing a 1-0 win over Fulham United. Both teams met in Round Three this season and played out a 1-1 draw.

It’s RAA NPLSA vs State League One Saturday afternoon, as Adelaide Blue Eagles face Croydon FC at Jack Smith Park. Croydon FC has been one of the RAA NPLSA early entertainers, currently sitting in third, only losing one match in their opening seven fixtures. Fresh off a 4-0 win over Sturt Lions, Croydon FC is eager to put together a cup run as they look to return to the Australia Cup Finals Rounds for the first time since 2015. After being without a win since Round One, Croydon FC’s opponents Adelaide Blue Eagles will be in great spirits after beating third-place West Adelaide 3-1 in Round Seven of State League One. Adelaide Blue Eagles were able to beat Northern Demons 4-2 in Round One of the Australia Cup which has set up this exciting matchup.

We have another RAA NPLSA matchup as Pro Paint & Panel Oval – Weigall Oval will host Adelaide Comets and Adelaide Olympic as they compete against each other for the second time in five days. On Tuesday night Adelaide Comets were able to beat Adelaide Olympic 1-0 in a tightly contested matchup which saw Adelaide Comets jump to second in the RAA NPLSA. Adelaide Comets is yet to be beaten this season and are excited to attempt to better their Quarter-Final finish in 2021. Although they’re great form, Adelaide Comets faces a tough challenge against the 2021 Australia Cup South Australian Champions Adelaide Olympic. After beating Adelaide City 2-1 in the Grand Final, Adelaide Olympic made a cup run that saw them make the Round of 16 where they were knocked out after losing 1-0 to Adelaide United. Though experiencing a great cup run in 2021, Adelaide Olympic has started the 2022 season in struggling form, which has seen them win only two of their opening seven games, resulting in them currently sitting in ninth.

Saturday football continues as Campbelltown City host Cove FC from State League Two at Steve Woodcock Sports Centre. Campbelltown City is currently experiencing a great run of form which has seen them reframe from losing since Round Two of the RAA NPLSA. This form has seen them jump to fourth on the table, providing great hope of making a great run in the 2022 Australia Cup. Campbelltown City will be looking to make a return to the Australia Cup Finals Rounds for the first time since their matchup with Melbourne City in 2019. Their opponents Cove FC are yet to experience defeat thus far this season, remaining undefeated in State League Two, while winning 6-1 in their Round One encounter with Pembroke Old Scholars SC. Could Cove FC cause a major upset in the Australia Cup?

In one of the final matches of Round Two will see State League One’s Eastern United face 2021 SAASL Sunday Premier A Champions Elizabeth Downs at VALO Football Centre. Eastern United had experienced a great run of form which saw them reframe from losing for five matches, including their Australia Cup Round One 7-0 win against Adelaide University Grads Red. However, Eastern United have now lost their last two matches, entering Round Two in bad form. They face a difficult challenge in Elizabeth Downs, who is always a strong performer in the Australia Cup. Elizabeth Downs put together a strong performance in the first round as they beat SAASL rivals, Brahma Lodge 4-0. Could we see another impressive cup run from Elizabeth Downs in 2022?
