Australia Cup 2023 Round of 32 - Matchday 5 Preview

Matchday Five of the Australia Cup 2023 Round of 32 matches will determine which remaining three sides will advance to the last 16.

Newcastle Jets FC v Brisbane Roar FC
Date:
Monday 14 August 2023
Time: 7:30 pm
Venue: Maitland Sports Ground

A-League Men’s teams Newcastle Jets and Brisbane face off at Maitland Sports Ground both eager to make the most of a new season.

The Jets overcame Melbourne Victory in the play-off to earn their place in the national round, where despite giving up a two-goal lead, they prevailed on penalties.

They will be eager to get out of the round of 32 this season having only done so twice in their history.

Monday will give new coach Ross Aloisi a vital look at his new squad in a competitive match against A-Leagues opposition.

The Roar went far in last year’s Cup making the semi-finals before they were stunned by NPL NSW outfit Sydney United 58.

After both failing to make the ALM finals last season, Monday offers these teams the chance to get this campaign off to the right start.

Northcote City FC v Adelaide United FC
Date:
Monday 14 August 2023
Time: 7:30 pm
Venue: John Cain Memorial Park

Northcote City face the mammoth task of hosting Adelaide United at John Cain Memorial Park.

City have had a competitive season in the NPL Victoria 2, winning one more game that they’ve lost.

The side are in some good form right now taking maximum points four of their last six matches in the competition.

Their run to the Round of 32 included some emphatic scorelines before scraping past Clifton Hill on penalties.

Adelaide United will be keen to add to their unparalleled history in the Cup after only making the quarterfinals in 2022.

The side come into Monday’s match off the back of last season’s successful ALM campaign where they made the semi-finals.

United were one of the best teams in the country in 2022/23 and will provide a prickly game for Northcote City.

Campbelltown City SC v Macarthur FC
Date:
Monday 14 August 2023
Time: 7:30 pm
Venue: Steve Woodcock Sports Centre

Reigning Australia Cup champions Macarthur FC travel to Steve Woodcock Sports Centre to face Campbelltown City SC.

The Bulls’ inaugural trophy failed to push the team on in the 2022/23 ALM season as they slumped to a finish at the foot of the table.

However, the team got off to the right start this campaign breezing past Perth Glory 4-0 to make the Round of 32.

Their opponents have had a solid season in 2023 finishing second on the NPL SA table, three points behind league leaders and fellow national-round entrant MetroStars.

There were some tight scorelines for City on their way to the Round of 32, winning three of their four games by a single goal.

They also made the Football SA Federation Cup final this season in another demonstration of their strong form in cup competitions.

Campbelltown City finished their league in flying form, but the Bulls will be eager to right the wrongs of last season.
