Australia Cup Quarter Finals Matchday Two preview

Australia Cup Quarter Final action continues on Wednesday night with six sides battling it out for the right to join Sydney United in the final four.

Oakleigh Cannons aim to cause a cupset against Sydney FC and join fellow NPL outfit Sydney United in the Semi Final draw while Adelaide United host Brisbane Roar and Macarthur take on Wellington Phoenix in the two all A-League Quarter Finals.

The draw for the Semi Finals will take place at the conclusion of Wednesday’s Quarter Final action.

Oakleigh Cannons and Sydney FC face off in the only A-League v Member Federation Club tie of this year’s Quarter Finals at Jack Edwards Reserve on Wednesday night.

The Cannons defeated Bonnyrigg White Eagles and Brisbane City, scoring 10 goals in the process on their way to the Quarter Finals.

Oakleigh attacker Joe Guest, who netted a hat-trick in his sides thrilling 5-3 last 16 win over Brisbane City sits equal second with Al Hassan Toure and Ben Waine on this Final Rounds leading scorer charts with three goals.

After beating Central Coast Mariners on penalties in the Round of 32 Sydney saw off NPL Victoria opposition in Bentleigh Greens 2-1 in the last 16.

Young guns Adrian Segecic and Aaron Gurd both scored first senior goals for the Sky Blues in their Round of 16 victory at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex.

Since the sides Round of 16 win, Sydney FC have completed the signings of English duo Jack Rodwell and Joe Lolley as well as Slovakian forward Robert Mak, it remains to be seen whether any will make a Sky Blue debut at Jack Edwards Reserve on Wednesday night.


Oakleigh Head Coach Chris Taylor has lead an NPL side to the Semi Finals once before, reaching the last four in 2017 with South Melbourne.

The Cannons come into Wednesday’s Quarter Final after defeating Heidelberg United on penalties after a pulsating 3-3 draw in an NPL Victoria Elimination Final on Friday night.

Adelaide United and Brisbane Roar battle it out in Australia Cup Quarter Final action at  ServiceFM Stadium on Wednesday night.

The two sides meet in the last eight after defeating NPL opposition on penalties in the Round of 16.

United defeated Adelaide City in a shootout after playing out a 2-2 draw in a thrilling South Australian derby.

Zach Clough and Louis D’Arrigo found the back of the net for the Reds over the course of the 120 minutes before Ben Halloran scored the winning spot kick for Carl Veart’s side.

Roar prevailed on penalties against NPL Victoria outfit Avondale after a battling 2-2 draw in wet and wild conditions at Valley Park Sports Centre.

New recruit Riku Danzaki grabbed the first goal of his second stint at the club, while the sides only other new signing Charlie Austin netted in the shootout.

Roar warmed up for Wednesday’s Quarter Final with a 7-0 win over an FQPL Wide Bay Select side in a friendly on the Fraser Coast.

Both sides had their cup runs ended in the last eight last season, with Adelaide losing to eventual winners Melbourne Victory while Brisbane were defeated by Sydney FC.

The Bulls aim to continue their deepest ever cup run while Wellington look to reach a second straight Semi Final with a win on Wednesday.

Dwight Yorke’s side have beaten Magpies Crusaders United and Modbury Jets on their way to the last eight, scoring ten goals in the process against a pair of sides from the second tiers of their respective states.

Wellington defeated Devonport Strikers 4-0 in the Round of 32 before knocking out Melbourne City for the second season in a row with a 2-1 win in the last 16.

Two of the competition’s top scorers so far in Al Hassan Toure and Ben Waine who sit equal second on the leading scorers charts with three goals to their name apiece go head-to-head in Wednesday’s Quarter Final.
