The 2022 Australia Cup Round of 16 gets underway with a pair of exciting fixtures on Wednesday night.

Both of Wednesday’s matches pit Member Federation Clubs against A-League Men’s sides in David v Goliath encounters.

Bentleigh Greens and Sydney FC battle it out for a Quarter Final berth at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on Wednesday night.

The Greens are chasing their second bit of cup success in the space of a few days after defeating Oakleigh Cannons 2-1 in the Dockerty Cup Final at Lakeside Stadium on Saturday thanks to goals from Tom Strickland and Yagoub Mustafa.

Nick Tolios’ side sit fifth on the NPL Victoria ladder with just two rounds left to play and feature several former A-League players including Danny Kim, George Lambadaridis and Ben Carrigan.

Bentleigh progressed to the last 16 for a fifth time thanks to an extra-time winner from substitute Ken Krolicki to see off Broadmeadow Magic in the Round of 32.

The Greens have caused a cupset once before – defeating Wellington Phoenix 1-0 thanks to a Marco Jankvovic header in the Round of 32 in 2018.

Sydney FC secured their place in the Round of 16 with a penalty shoot-out win over Central Coast Mariners after a thrilling 3-3 draw at Leichhardt Oval.

Adam Le Fondre, Anthony Caceres and Max Burgess all got their names on the scoresheet before Andrew Redmayne penalty produced some penalty shoot-out heroics to see the Sky Blues through.

Spanish fullback Diego Caballo made his debut for Sydney FC in their Round of 32 win with the Sky Blues also confirming their second new signing ahead of the new campaign - Slovakian winger Robert Mak on Tuesday.

Steve Corica’s side, who have never previously been defeated by a team from outside the A-League in the Australia Cup have won the tournament once before – defeating Adelaide United 2-1 in the 2017 final.

Modbury Jets - the only member federation club left in the Australia Cup that plays outside the top division in their state, take on Macarthur FC in a David v Goliath battle at Service FM Stadium on Wednesday night.

After travelling to Perth and putting five past NPL WA side Armadale in their Round of 32 debut, the Jets now have the opportunity to test themselves against A-League opposition.

It’s been a successful season for Maurice Natale’s side with the South Australian State League One Premiership already secured as well as promotion to NPL SA for the 2023 season.

Twin brothers, Hamish and Liam Mccabe, who both scored in the Round of 32 win over Armadale shape as key figures if the Jets are to pull off a cupset at Service FM Stadium on Wednesday.

Hamish sits top of the SA State League One scorers charts with 18 goals while Liam created nine scoring chances against Armadale in the Round of 32 – the most by and player in a single game since the beginning of the 2021 tournament.

Macarthur look to reach the Quarter Finals for the first time in what is the second match of the Dwight Yorke era.

The Bulls defeated Magpies Crusaders United 6-0 in their Round of 32 match thanks to goals from Anthony Carter, Jonathan Aspropotamitis, Danny De Silva, Daniel Arzani and Al Hassan Toure.

Macarthur reached the Round of 16 in their only previous Australia Cup run where they were defeated 2-0 by Sydney FC after extra time.
