Australia Cup Round of 16 Matchday Three Preview

Australia Cup Round of 16 action concludes with four thrilling fixtures on Wednesday night.

Sides from Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and New Zealand will battle it out for the right to join Sydney FC, Macarthur, Sydney United and Peninsula Power in the last eight.

The Draw for the Australia Cup 2022 Quarter-Finals will take place live on 10 Play following the conclusion of Wednesday's matches with Quarter-Final fixtures scheduled for 27, 28, 30 and 31 August.

Adelaide City and Adelaide United are set to battle it out in a scintillating Australia Cup Round of 16 derby at ServiceFM Stadium on Wednesday night.

The clash will be the first time City and United have met in a competitive match with both sets of players aiming to prove a point in their battle for South Australian supremacy.

Eight current players have represented the reigning NPLSA Champions, Adelaide City, while three currently reside in the squad of the Australia Cup’s most successful club, Adelaide United

Adelaide City come into the match after securing the 2022 NPLSA Premiership with a 6-0 win over Adelaide Olympic on the weekend, their seventh match unbeaten including their triumph over Logan Lightning in the Round of 32.

The Reds enter the match having defeated Newcastle Jets 2-0 in the Round of 32 with a goal from George Blackwood and a piece of individual brilliance from Hiroshi Ibusuki on a bicycle kick.

Melbourne City and Wellington Phoenix face off for a Quarter Final berth in an all A-League affair at Casey Fields on Wednesday night.

The two sides went head-to-head in the Quarter Finals of last season's competition with young goalkeeper, Alex Paulsen stealing the show with three saves in the penalty shootout as Phoenix progressed to the Semi Finals.

Wellington reached the last 16 with a 4-0 win over Devonport Strikers thanks to a Ben Waine brace as well as goals to Oskar Van Hattum and Bozhidar Kraev earlier this month.

Melbourne City, who have never lost a Round of 16 match qualified for this stage of the competition with a 1-0 win over Newcastle Olympic.

A first senior goal for academy product Luke Oresti proved decisive as City overcame a dogged Olympic outfit.

Oakleigh Cannons and Brisbane City look to join fellow NPL sides Sydney United and Peninsula Power in the Quarter Final draw when they meet on Wednesday night.

Oakleigh reached the Round of 16 with a 5-0 win over Bonnyrigg White Eagles thanks to goals from Joe Guest, Chris Lucas, Wade Dekker and a Daniel Clark brace at the Bonnyrigg Sports Club in July.

Lucas' effort leaves him level on nine goals with Liam Boland and Patrick Antelmi as the Australia Cup Final Rounds all time leading goal scorers for NPL clubs.

Chris Taylor's side who sit third on the NPL Victoria ladder come into Wednesday's match off the back of a 2-1 weekend defeat at the hands of St Albans.

Brisbane City defeated Cockburn City 3-1 with goals to Yuta Hirayama, Sam Sibatuara and Brandon Reeves on their Final Rounds debut to reach the last 16.

Matt Smith's side currently occupy seventh position on the NPL Queensland ladder with just two matches left to play this season.

City, who's side also contains former A-League defender Daniel Bowles and Mike Cockerill Medalist Fraser Hills defeated Capalaba 4-0 in their most recent outing.

Avondale and Brisbane Roar both look to the reach the Quarter Finals for a second time when they do battle at Valley Park Sports Centre on Wednesday night.

Avondale reached the last 16 with a 6-0 Round of 32 win on the road over Mindil Aces in the Northern Territory.

Cup stalwart, Liam Boland bagged a hat-trick in the Avengers Round of 32 win, leaving him level on nine goals with Chris Lucas and Patrick Antelmi as the Australia Cup Final Rounds all time leading goal scorers for NPL clubs.

Avondale trio Gol Gol Mebrahtu, Joey Katebian and Bon Scott have all previously spent time on the books of the Roar.

Zoran Markovski's side, who sit fifth on the NPL Victoria ladder warmed up for Wednesday's match with a 4-1 win over Heidelberg United at Olympic Village on Sunday.

It was Heidelberg who Brisbane Roar defeated to reach the Round of 16, with Rahmat Akbari, Henry Hore and Nikola Mileusnic all netting in a 3-1 victory.

Both of Warren Moon's off season signings, Charlie Austin and Riku Danzaki started in the Roar's Round of 32 win.
