Club in Focus: Western Sydney Wanderers

After failing to reach the Australia Cup Final Rounds last year, Western Sydney Wanderers will be out to make a mark in this competition this term when they travel west to face local Perth side Floreat Athena.

Club: Western Sydney Wanderers
State: New South Wales
Home ground: CommBank Stadium
Founded: 2012
Australia Cup Final Rounds appearances (inc. 2023): Eight
Best result: Semi Finals (2017, 2018)
Head Coach: Marko Rudan

Australia Cup Record

  • 2014 – Round of 32
  • 2015 – Quarter Finals
  • 2016 – Quarter Finals
  • 2017 – Semi Finals
  • 2018 – Semi Finals
  • 2019 – Quarter Finals
  • 2020 – Competition not held
  • 2021 – Round of 16
  • 2022 – Australia Cup Playoffs

Marko Rudan will be hoping the resurgence his team experienced last year in the A-League Men – where they secured a first finals appearance since 2017 – can translate into strong cup campaign.

However, success for the Wanderers has been largely futile in the tournament and perhaps are more remembered for the wrong reasons after becoming the first A-League side to suffer a ‘cupset’ at the hands of Adelaide City in 2014.

Since then Western Sydney’s best result has been successive Semi Final exits to Adelaide United and Sydney FC in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
