Daniel Elder to referee Australia Cup 2022 Final

Football Australia is pleased to advise that Daniel Elder has been selected to referee Saturday night’s Australia Cup 2022 Final at CommBank Stadium in Sydney.

Hailing from Adelaide (SA), 29-year-old Elder will be assisted by Andrej Giev (NSW) and Andrew Meimarakis (VIC), with Kurt Ams (NSW) and Brad Wright (NSW) selected as the Fourth and Fifth Official respectively, with the group to preside over the Australia Cup 2022 Final featuring Sydney United 58 FC and Macarthur FC.

This will be a special occasion for Elder, as the Australia Cup 2022 Final can be the only time he will be able to perform the central referee role at an Australia Cup Final.

As introduced by the Football Australia Referees Committee when the then named FFA Cup was created, each match official could only be appointed to each officiating role at the Australia Cup Final once. This was to establish a tradition of prestige with being appointed to an Australia Cup Final once in the match official’s career.

In total, 55 match officials were appointed to Australia Cup 2022 Final Rounds’ fixtures, from Member Federation officials in Tasmania and the Northern Territory, through to FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM candidates such as Chris Beath, Ashley Beecham, Casey Reibelt, and Anton Shchetinin.

On making the announcement, Football Australia Head of Referees Nathan Magill said: “I would like to congratulate Daniel, Andrej, Andrew, Kurt, and Brad on their appointment to the Australia Cup 2022 Final.

“Their selection is deserved acknowledgment of their consistent performance throughout the competition this season, where refereeing in knockout football is a great experience and with officials rising to the challenge.

“As with players and coaches, the Australia Cup forms a critical development pathway for match officials throughout Australia, and it has been great to witness the match officials perform strongly from the preliminary stages through to now.

“I would like to acknowledge the Member Federation match officials who have been appointed to the preliminary round matches, and referee staff who have worked tirelessly in the development of these match officials across all four corners of the country,” Magill concluded.

Saturday’s Australia Cup 2022 Final has already created history, with Sydney United 58 FC becoming the first semi-professional club to reach the Final of Australia’s premier knockout competition where they will face Isuzu UTE A-League side, Macarthur FC, coached by former Premier League star, Dwight Yorke.

Over 10,000 tickets have already been sold for the Australia Cup 2022 Final, with tickets still available at Ticketek.
