Dávila reflects on cup triumph after difficult few months

Inspirational Macarthur FC captain Ulises Dávila was at his influential best as his side beat Sydney United 58 2-0 in the Australia Cup Final 2022 at CommBank Stadium on Saturday night.

Dávila scored his team’s second spot-kick while being awarded the Mark Viduka Medal for his scintillating performance.

The Mexican revealed the last few months have been extremely challenging following the sudden death of his wife Lily Pacheco in May.

His Bulls teammates including Al Hassan Toure, Daniel Arzani, Daniel De Silva as well as Head Coach Dwight Yorke, dedicated the triumph to the 31-year-old.

“Yeah really been difficult, very difficult,” Dávila told Network 10 after the match.

“But everything happened for a reason, I believe a lot in God so I know she she's okay.

“She's watching me, she’s supporting me and guiding me.

“And obviously my kid gave me a lot of strength. The boys here give me life. They give me happiness. I still have a lot of hope in life so I will try to keep going.”

Macarthur have been a free-scoring outfit during their five matches in the cup, finding the net 19 times, while conceding just two goals on their way to collecting their first trophy in the club's short history.

Dávila credits his new boss – in his first professional coaching job – for instilling his philosophy within the squad so quickly.

“The gaffer straight away he made a big impact in the team and I think he will make a big impact in the league,” he explained.

“He just makes us have good combinations with every player and very happy to be here in the team.”
