On this day in 2014: Reds win inaugural Australia Cup

Adelaide United lifted the inaugural Australia Cup, on this day, December 16 2014 following a 1-0 win over Perth Glory at Coopers Stadium.

The Reds played Wellington Phoenix, Brisbane Roar, Sydney FC and Central Coast Mariners en route to reaching the Final.

In front of more than 16,000 fans Sergio Cirio's second-half finish secured a historic win for Adelaide and its first piece of silverware since 2006.

It was the Spaniard's competition leading sixth goal in the Cup to claim the top-scorer award as well as the Mark Viduka Medal for being the Player of the Match.

Marcelo Carrusca threaded an intricate pass into the then 29-year-old and with a clever touch evaded the onrushing Danny Vukovic with his attempt deflecting in off the Perth defender, who could do little to prevent the ball going in.

Josh Risdon was earlier dismissed, reducing Perth to 10 men after picking up a second yellow card for a shirt pull.
