On this day in 2018: Reds get their revenge thanks to stunning Goodwin brace

Adelaide United became the first team to win the Australia Cup for second time in the modern era on this day, October 30, 2018 after a plucky 2-1 win over Sydney FC at Coopers Stadium.

The Reds had not beaten the Sky Blues in any competition since April 2016 and were still reeling following its extra-time defeat in the Australia Cup Final a year earlier to the same opponent.

It meant for Marco Kurz's side they would need to be at their very best against the reigning A-League Men premiers and champions.

And while Adelaide were largely resolute and relied on grit and discipline - that could only get them so far against the best team in the country at the time. An inspiring performance had to come from somewhere and it did in the form of Craig Goodwin.

The then 26-year-old delivered arguably the greatest individual display in a final with two sensational goals.

He dispatched a superb free-kick to open the scoring before Adam Le Fondre restored parity from the penalty spot.

In the 74th minute, Goodwin then unleashed a phenomenal first-time half-volley on his weaker right foot which arrowed into the top corner to secure a famous triumph in front of more than 14,000 fans.

His brace meant the winger finished with five goals to claim the Golden Boot and indeed collect the Mark Viduka Medal.
