FFA Cup Match Preview: Adelaide United v Melbourne Victory

Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory will battle it out on Wednesday night at Coopers Stadium for a spot in the FFA Cup 2021 Semi Finals.

The two original rivals were drawn against each other after wins over National Premier Leagues sides Adelaide Olympic and Gold Coast Knights respectively in the Round of 16.

Adelaide United - record three-time winners of the Cup - reached the Quarter Finals with a win over Floreat Athena in the Round of 32, before defeating local side Olympic back in October.

The A-League Men side sit seventh on the table after six games, and come into Wednesday's clash off the back of their first win of the season; a 4-0 thumping of Wellington Phoenix.

Meanwhile, Melbourne Victory are on a three-game winning streak in the FFA Cup, having defeated Perth Glory in the Play Offs, Adelaide City in the Round of 32, and then last Thursday knocking out the Knights in a come-from-behind win on the Gold Coast in the Round of 16.

Tony Popovic's side have turned things around in 2021/22 and sit top of the A-League Men table after six games, equal on 13 points with Macarthur FC.

Wednesday's FFA Cup Quarter Final will be the third time Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory meet in the competition, having faced off back in 2015 in the same stage, and in the Round of 16 in 2017.

On that day in 2015 it was Victory who came out on top at AAMI Park, and staggeringly still remains the last game that Adelaide United have lost in regular time in the FFA Cup.

Adelaide were the ones victorious in 2017, winning 3-0 on their way to the Final.
