FFA Cup Match Preview: Melbourne City v Wellington Phoenix

Melbourne City and Wellington Phoenix will battle it out in the FFA Cup Quarter Finals at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on Wednesday night (7:30pm AEDT kick-off).

Wednesday’s Quarter Final will be City Men's first competitive match in the South East since moving to the area earlier this year.

The defending Isuzu UTE A-League Men’s Champions qualified for the last eight with a pair of wins over NPL Victoria opposition.

City defeated South Melbourne 3-0 in the Round of 32 thanks to goals from Connor Metcalfe and Scott Galloway, before a Matthew Leckie strike saw them prevail 1-0 over Hume City in the Round of 16.

HIGHLIGHTS: Hume City 0-1 Melbourne City

City sit fifth after five games of A-League action and come into Wednesday’s match off the back of a 2-2 draw in a pulsating Melbourne Derby back on December 18.

However, the home side will be without star marksman Jamie Maclaren who was sent off in the closing stages of the derby.

Wellington sit further back in 11th position on the league table with just one win to their name after six matches.

The Phoenix will arrive into Wednesday's clash after suffering a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Adelaide United on New Years' Day - their fourth league loss on the bounce.

Wellington booked a spot in the FFA Cup Quarter Finals for the first time in their history with wins over Western United and Avondale FC.

A Ben Waine header proved decisive as the Phoenix defeated United 1-0 in the Round of 32, before a brace from Jaushua Sotirio and goals to Waine and Luka Prso sealed a relatively comfortable 4-1 Round of 16 win over a 10-man Avondale.

HIGHLIGHTS: Avondale FC 1-4 Wellington Phoenix

City and Wellington have previously met once in FFA Cup action with City running out 5-1 winners thanks to goals from Aaron Mooy, Harry Novillo, Bruno Fornaroli, Robert Koren and Wade Dekker in the Round of 16 in 2015.
