FFA Cup Match Preview: Newcastle Olympic vs Macarthur FC

Newcastle Olympic and Macarthur FC will both make their FFA Cup Round of 32 debuts when they go head-to-head at Newcastle No.2 Sportsground on Saturday evening.

Olympic qualified for the national rounds for the first time thanks to wins over Coffs City United, Lambton Jaffas, Maitland FC and Cooks Hills United.

Former Isuzu UTE A-League Men’s forward Joel Griffiths serves as Player/Coach, while his brother Ryan Griffiths, another former top-flight forward, also plies his trade for the Hamilton-based outfit.

Olympic’s off season recruitment has been headlined by the addition of former Central Coast Mariners shot-stopper Adam Pearce, and joined by Jackson Burston, Jarrod Dodds and Marcus Duncan at Darling Street Oval.

Olympic sat seventh with 19 points to their name when the NPL Northern NSW season was abandoned after 16 rounds as a result of the COVID-19 enforced lockdown.

Saturday’s match will be Macarthur’s first ever appearance in the FFA Cup. The Isuzu UTE A-League Men’s youngest club finished 6th in their first season before reaching the Semi Finals.

Ante Milicic’s side have added a number of impressive recruits ahead of the upcoming season including: Ulises Davila, Craig Noone, Daniel De Silva, Tomi Juric, Tomislav Uskok, Jordon Mutch, Al Hassan Toure and Filip Kurto.

The Bulls have suffered defeat in all four of their pre-season friendlies leading into Saturday’s match, going down to Sydney FC, Central Coast Mariners, Western Sydney Wanderers and Newcastle Jets.
