Iona seal cup win in first ever senior men's match

Iona FC defeated Nambucca Strikers 2-0 in their first ever Australia Cup match at Coffs Football Centre on Sunday afternoon.

But not only was Sunday’s win their first ever cup clash but a first ever senior men’s match for the Port Macquarie based club.

Iona, who were established five years ago and play out of the St Columba Anglican school previously only had junior teams.

In 2022 Iona will boast 41 teams and over 400 players from U6 through to Men’s First Grade with Sunday’s win kicking off a new era for the club.

The club’s newly formed men’s side is made up of current past and current St Columba students, staff and parents as well as Iona junior team coaches and players from neighbouring schools.

Alex Dalzel – year 10 student at St Columba scored the club’s first ever goal before Lockie Horsley rounded out the 2-0 score line and a winning start for Iona.

Iona continue their cup run on Saturday afternoon in a David v Golaith clash that pits them against reigning Coastal Premier League Premiers, Coffs City United.

Coffs City defeated Richmond Rovers and Camden Haven Redbacks, scoring ten goals in the process to book their spot in Preliminary Round 4.

Last season Coffs City were just one win shy of the Round of 32, defeating NPL side Lake Macquarie City on their way to Preliminary Round 7 where they were edged out 1-0 by another NPL outfit, Newcastle Olympic.

Saturday’s Preliminary Round 4 clash at the Coffs Football Centre kicks off at 4pm.
