‘It really puts us on the map’: O'Doherty hoping to extend Modbury’s cup run against Macarthur

Having shocked NPL WA side Armadale in the Round of 32, Modbury defender Cameron O'Doherty is hoping his South Australian State League One side can continue their Cup run against A-League opposition.

As the only member federation club left in the Australia Cup that plays outside the top division in their state, Modbury’s Round of 16 clash against Macarthur FC will be a true David v Goliath battle.

But after travelling to Perth and putting five goals past NPL WA side Armadale, O'Doherty said Modbury are ready to test themselves against the best.

“It’s going to be massive,” O'Doherty told australiacup.com.au.

There definitely are a lot of people who wouldn't have heard of Modbury before this draw so this really puts us on the map.

“I know for a lot of the fans, committee and people around the club, it's a really good thing to see their team on the big stage, performing so well and making them proud.

“It’s a really good standard in the A-League and it’s going to be good to see how we compare with the likes of the best.

“We recently secured the State League title and promotion to the NPL so we have been able to rest players in our last game which will put us in a good position and give us some fresh bodies for Wednesday.”

After coming through the South Australian National Training Centre (NTC) program and enjoying a stint at the Australian Institute of Sport before it disbanded, O'Doherty joined Modbury from the North Eastern MetroStars in search of regular first-team football.

While O’Doherty loved his time at Modbury, he left the club in 2021 to pursue a new challenge in the American college system with Monroe but he quickly returned to the club he loves.

“Last year, I went over to New York after a bit of a dry spell in Australia because I wanted a new experience," he said.

It was a good experience, I liked it a lot but it really just wasn't for me. Especially, after coming back and enjoying my football so much here at Modbury in Adelaide.”

Cameron is also the brother of ex-Newcastle Jets midfielder Jordan O'Doherty and professional FIFA gamer Jamie O'Doherty.

While Jordan has moved away from Adelaide to pursue his professional football career and Jamie is busy with FIFA Esports, Cameron said they have always supported each other.

“I’m really close with both of my brothers,” O'Doherty said.

“We are a similar age group so we’ve always just grown up playing video games or football in the backyard together.

“Jamie came over to Perth for the game against Armadale and he will be in the crowd again on Wednesday night. For sure I will be able to hear him. “
