Preview: Australia Cup Round of 32 Matchday Four

The final four Australia Cup Round of 16 qualifiers will be locked in when Round of 32 action draws to a close on Wednesday night.

Clubs from Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, the ACT, Tasmania and New Zealand will battle it out for a spot in the draw that will take place live on 10 play following the conclusion of Wednesday's matches.

Western United vs Melbourne Victory

The defending A-League Champions and Australia Cup winners go head-to-head in Round of 32 action at AAMI Park on Wednesday night.

The sides most recent meeting was over two legs in the Semi Finals of last season's A-League which Western United won 4-1 on aggregate en route to their maiden Championship.

The off-season has brought change at both club's with a number of new signings in contention to make competitive debuts for their respective sides on Wednesday night.

Victory's off-season recruitment has been headlined by the addition of former Manchester United winger, Nani as well as Tomi Juric and Paul Izzo.

Former Socceroo James Troisi has been the sole signing made by John Aloisi's side so far.

Devonport City Strikers vs Wellington Phoenix

Devonport Strikers and Wellington Phoenix battle it out in the fourth Member Federation Club vs A-League tie of this year's Round of 32 at Valley Road on Wednesday night.

The Phoenix have been on the receiving end of a cupset twice before, going down at the Round of 32 stage to Bentleigh Greens and Brisbane Strikers in 2018 & 2019 respectively.

Wellington however come into Wednesday's clash after enjoying their best ever Australia Cup run in 2021, reaching the Semi Finals where they were beaten by eventual Champions Melbourne Victory.

New signings Kosta Barbarouses and Bozhidar Kraev are both in line to play a part for the Phoenix on Wednesday night.

Lining up for the home side on Wednesday night will be former Phoenix shot-stopper Keegan Smith, who made six A-League appearances for the Phoenix in the 2017/18 A-League season.

Devonport, who have come out victorious in each of their two previous Round of 32 appearances sit eleven points clear at the top of the NPL Tasmania standings, having suffered defeated just once this season.

  • This will be the first meeting between Devonport City Strikers and Wellington Phoenix in the Australia Cup; indeed, it will be the first time Devonport City Strikers have faced an A-League Men team in the tournament.

  • Wellington Phoenix won their most recent Round of 32 match in the Australia Cup (1-0 v Western United FC – 7 December 2021); they will be aiming for back-to-back wins in such fixtures for the first time in club history.

Peninsula Power vs NWS Spirit

Peninsula Power and NWS Spirit both chase a first ever Australia Cup Round of 16 berth when they face off at AJ Kelly Park on Wednesday night.

Power will be hoping for third time lucky at the Round of 32 stage after being defeated by Melbourne City and Brisbane Roar in their two previous appearances at this stage of the competition.

Power, who defeated Surfers Paradise Apollo, Gold Coast Knights, Gold Coast United and Rochedale Rovers on their way to the Round of 32 currently sit third on the NPL Queensland ladder and come into Wednesday's match off the back of a 1-0 win over second placed Olympic FC.

Spirit make their Final Rounds debut in what is a big week for the club with the Waratah Cup Final against Sydney United 58 scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

David Perkovic's side have already secured promotion to the NPL NSW for the 2023 season and come into Wednesday's match off the back of a 6-1 weekend win over Hills United.

  • This will be the first meeting between Peninsula Power and NWS Spirit FC in the Australia Cup; indeed, it will be NWS Spirit FC’s first appearance in the Round of 32.
  • This will be Peninsula Power’s third appearance in the Australia Cup Round of 32; they have lost their previous two matches at this stage by an aggregate score of 5-0.
  • NWS Spirit FC qualified for the 2022 Australia Cup Round of 32 following a 5-4 penalty shootout victory against Wollongong Wolves FC; the fixture had ended at 1-1 following extra time on the day.

Sydney United 58 vs Monaro Panthers

Sydney United 58 and Monaro Panthers go head-to-head in Round of 32 action at the Sydney United Sports Centre on Wednesday night.

United take part in the Australia Cup Final Rounds for a seventh time in a week that will see them face fellow Round of 32 entrant NWS Spirit in the Waratah Cup Final on Sunday.

United, who finished eighth on the NPL NSW league table after the 2022 regular season came to a close last weekend were the only side from New South Wale's top tier to qualify for this year's Round of 32.

Monaro make their Final Rounds debut on Wednesday night after defeating Wagga City United, ANU City, Canberra Olympic and Woden Weston on their way to the Round of 32.

Frank Cachia's side, who include former Sydney FC and Brisbane Roar winger, Kofi Danning sit third in the NPL Capital Football standings after 15 rounds of action.

  • This will be the first meeting between Sydney United 58 FC and Monaro Panthers FC in the Australia Cup Round of 32; indeed, it will be Monaro Panthers’ inaugural appearance in the Round of 32.
