Toure: 'We’ve created history and it’s good to be a part of history'

Macarthur FC forward Al Hassan Toure dedicated his side’s Australia Cup Final win to his teammate and captain Ulises Davila.

Holding back tears, an emotional Toure spoke to Network 10 post-match about what this triumph meant, especially after the heartbreak Davila has had to endure following the sudden death of his wife four months ago.

The 22-year-old said the win was for the Mexican international, with Dávila scoring a 90th minute penalty to seal a 2-0 win over Sydney United 58 and collect the Mark Viduka Medal.

“It’s always good to win a final,” he said.

“I think our captain needed it today with everything going on with his wife.

“I think this is more for him and his family. He’s been going through a hard time and this is just for him.”

Toure spoke highly of the culture created within the team which has only grown stronger during this Australia Cup journey.

“I think everyone in this team we’ve become a family, especially the coaching staff,” he added.

“We’ve created a good team mentality and tonight was just about Uli and family.

“I’m glad we got the win for him and this is what football is about – these kind of moments and I just wanted to share the moment with each and every one of them.”

No stranger to a cup final, Toure himself played an instrumental role in the contest at CommBank Stadium, slotting the opening penalty in confident fashion. It was his fifth goal in the competition this tournament to claim the Golden Boot.

The tricky winger was also a Mark Viduka Medallist with Adelaide United back in 2019 as he broke the deadlock in a 4-0 rout of Melbourne City.

“Personally, it’s a big achievement,” Toure said, when asked about the success on an individual level.

“Couple of years I’ve had with injuries and everything going so getting this win and getting the cup and being back to full fitness is very good.

“I couldn’t thank the coach enough and the coaching staff, the players that have motivated me throughout this pre-season to get me where I am.

“And we deserve this more than anything. We’ve created history and it’s good to be a part of history.”
