WATCH: Youngsters shine as A-League duo secure Quarter Final Spots
A-League Men's duo Sydney FC and Macarthur FC became the first two clubs to secure their spot in the Australia Cup 2022 Quarter Finals with victories over member federation opposition on Wednesday night.
Bentleigh Greens – 1 (Ajak RIAK 86’)
Sydney FC – 2 (Adrian SEGECIC 40’, Aaron GURD 68’)
Sydney FC reached the Quarter Finals for a sixth time with a hard fought 2-1 win over Bentleigh Greens at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on Wednesday night.
It was the youngsters who shone for Sydney with Adrian Segecic and Aaron Gurd grabbing their first senior goals for the Sky Blues in Wednesday’s win.
Segecic, who came away with a pair of assists in Sydney’s Round of 32 win over the Mariners opened the scoring in the 40th minute when he brought down an Alex Wilkinson long ball, drove past his marker and delicately finished past Pierce Clarke to send his side into the break with a lead.
Aaron Gurd, who was making his starting debut in Sky Blue rose highest to nod home a Max Burgess corner midway through the second half, making it a night to remember for the 20-year-old defender.
Bentleigh pulled a goal back in the dying stages through Ajak Riak, who headed home a Corey Sewell cross at the back post in the 86th minute for what proved to be a mere consolation as Steve Corica’s side held on for a 2-1 win.
Modbury Jets – 0
Macarthur FC – 4 (Al Hassan TOURE 9’, Lachlan ROSE 45+2’ 90’, Charles M’MOMBWA 63’)
Macarthur will compete in the Australia Cup Quarter Finals for the first time after defeating Modbury Jets 4-0 at Service FM Stadium on Wednesday night.
Lachie Rose bagged a brace with Al Hassan Toure and Charles M’Mombwa also getting their names on the scoresheet as the Bulls made it ten unanswered goals in two games under Dwight Yorke.
Former Adelaide United front man Toure grabbed another Australia Cup goal in his home state when he volleyed home a cross from Rose in the ninth minute to open the scoring.
After providing the assist for the first goal Rose then got his own name on the scoresheet on the stroke of half time, finding the back of the net with a deflected strike to put his side two up.
Substitute, M’Mombwa made it three in the 63rd minute when he skipped past his marker before slamming an effort into the bottom corner from the top of the box.
Rose then got in behind the defence and beat Luke Luongo with a first-time finish to complete his brace and round out the 4-0 scoreline in the 90th minute.
