Australia Cup 2023 Round of 32 - Matchday 1 Preview

The first teams will get their chance to make the Round of 16 of the Australia Cup on Friday night.

There is an even spread of sides across the country setting up some great viewing to start the national phase of the competition.

Peninsula Power FC v Wellington Phoenix FC

National Premier Leagues Queensland’s Peninsula Power take on Wellington Phoenix at AJ Kelly Park seeking to cause an early upset in the national round of the Australia Cup.

The Power have had an indifferent season in Queensland’s top competition sitting in the middle of the table.

However, they come into this one in some positive form, with an eleven-game unbeaten run in the league.

The Redcliffe-based outfit performed strongly in the Cup last year making the quarter-finals before being knocked out by eventual finalists Sydney United 58.

They’ve had a steady run through to the national round in 2023, conceding just twice in the four games played.

Wellington will be the only A-Leagues side in action on Friday night eager to build on their ALM finals appearance last season.

There’s been a turnover of players at the Phoenix in the off-season with several of their established stars moving on.

This will be an early chance for those coming in to impress new coach Giancarlo Italiano with the new campaign approaching.

Broadmeadow Magic FC v Sydney United 58 FC
Date:
Friday 4 August 2023
Time: 7:30 pm AEST
Venue: Magic Park
GET TICKETS

In the all-NSW clash, Broadmeadow Magic host Sydney United 58 at Magic Park.

The Magic have had a good season so far and are still in with a chance of taking out the NPL Northern NSW title.

Broadmeadow strolled into the Round of 32 with a series of high-scoring victories, scoring 24 goals in the four games.

United 58 will dream of going one better this year after the NPL NSW team’s miracle run to the Cup final in 2022.

While demonstrating inconsistent league form, Miro Vlastelica’s men have been an irresistible force in cup competitions over the past couple of years.

The team picked up an important win over the weekend where top scorer Patrick Antelmi bagged a brace, so he’ll be one to watch for on Friday night.

Sydney United are still yet to concede a goal in the Cup, but that record will be under pressure against the free-flowing Magic.

MetroStars SC v Inglewood United FC

Time: 7:30 pm AEST
Venue: T.K Shutter Reserve

South Australia’s MetroStars play Western Australia’s Inglewood United at T.K Shutter Reserve with the teams showcasing contrasting fortunes in 2023.

MetroStars have had an outstanding campaign in the NPL South Australia sitting on top of the league in the final stages of the competition.

The side have won 17 of their 21 games in the league which sees them oozing with confidence ahead of this match.

Their run to the round of 32 has been similarly spectacular winning all their games scoring four or more in each.

Inglewood United also had an impressive route to the national round, scoring 14 goals and conceding just two.

Their league campaign has not been as flattering though, currently sitting at the foot of the table.

They’ll want to put in a positive performance here and get what’s left of their season back on track.

Mount Druitt Town Rangers FC v Canberra Croatia FC
Date:
Friday 4 August 2023
Time: 7:30 pm AEST
Venue: Popondetta Park
GET TICKETS

Mount Druitt Town Rangers face Canberra Croatia FC at Popondetta Park in an intriguing clash.

The Rangers find themselves in the middle of a relegation battle in the NPL NSW, but the Cup has provided some reprieve for them.

Stewart Montgomery’s team registered some big scorelines in the preliminary rounds of the Cup, while conceding only two times.

They’ll be keen to put in a better performance than what they did last weekend where they were battered 6-0 in the NSW topflight.

Canberra Croatia FC have been a thrilling team to watch in the Cup with a series of goal fests on their route to the national round.

Their league form in the NPL Capital Football places them in the bottom half of the table, however, they have only lost one of their last five.

With these teams struggling in their respective leagues at the moment, this game could offer some much-needed momentum for the winner.
